The FinanceFlick: My Path to Sustainable Finance
Welcome to The FinanceFlick! This is Ariadne, your go-to finance geek. Today, I’m sharing a bit about my journey into sustainable finance and why it captivates me more than conventional investment banking. So, if you’re up for a quick story, let’s unpack this!
A Childhood Rooted in Sustainability
Growing up, my dad, a Civil Engineer specializing in Hydraulics, and my mom, an architect with a passion for sustainable design, have had a significant influence on my perspective on sustainability. With my dad’s long career in the water industry and my mom’s dedication to eco-friendly architecture, our household has always been conscious about conserving water and minimizing waste. If you think we’re the kind of family that’s obsessed with Vejas, you’ve got it spot on! Those vegan sneakers are our absolute faves.
Falling in Love with Numbers
When it came to choosing a career, my love for numbers led me to finance. I was that kid who geeked out over solving math problems for fun, and the precision and logic of finance were incredibly appealing. I knew I wanted to do something impactful, but I also wanted to work with numbers in a dynamic and challenging environment.
After a few twists and turns in consultancy and M&A, where I sharpened my skills in analyzing financial statements, negotiating deals, and advising clients, I found myself at a crossroads. I had the opportunity to either continue down the conventional investment banking path or pivot to something that aligned more closely with my values.
Why Sustainable Finance?
In this space, I get to work on initiatives that have a real impact on society, all while crunching numbers and strategizing for financial growth. For instance, I connect with fascinating individuals to explain one of the brightest financial strategies behind solar. You could say that I sleep easy knowing my work supports renewable energy projects that lead to socially responsible choices.
The Long Ride Ahead
Will I stick with sustainable finance for the long haul? You bet! As long as it continues to challenge and excite me, I’m in. This field is always evolving, with new opportunities and innovations. The potential to drive systemic change and promote global sustainability keeps me hyped every day.
My journey into sustainable finance naturally progresses from my upbringing and professional aspirations. As I grow in this field, I’m excited to see how sustainability will shape the future of finance and our world as a whole.
